History
Kentucky, like many other states, faces a workforce crisis and it is estimated by 2016, the demand for DSPs in home and community based settings will outstrip supply by 30% (PHI 2007). In response, to this pending crisis, in 2003, Seven Counties Services and The Council on Developmental Disabilities partnered together and submitted a grant to The Centers of Medicare and Medicaid under the Demonstration to Improve the Direct Service Community Workforce to study what strategies improve the recruitment and retention among DSPs. One of the most significant outcomes of this funding initiative was the formation of SPEAK and its activities.
In 2007, SPEAK was one of two recipients of the 2007 Moving Mountains Award from the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP). These awards are presented to organizations and agencies that have demonstrated best practices in direct support workforce development.
